Kerr-rist I ended up writing a lot. It's all pretty rambling too because I don't feel like editing or organising it better.
Here's a response for you Zippy, with my thoughts provoked by your recent entry.

Coulda spent the time I took writing that, to revise my research paper. Or do any one of half a dozen other things I should be doing. But, I had more fun writing this.

Zamenhofa tago; Pensoj pri E-o | Zamenhof day and some thoughts about Esperanto [Dec. 15th, 2006|03:51 pm]
[Tags|, ]

Eo

(Pli-malpli.)

Today; December 15; the birthdate of LL Zamenhof, creator of Esperanto; Zamenhof day. The ELNA website is trying to get everyone to write a bilingual entry today.

Okay, I know none of my journal readers understand Esperanto... but it'll be good practice for me, because I haven't written anything in Esperanto in a long time.

I don't know when it was... two years? Really that long ago? Anyway, some while ago, I first learned about Esperanto. I read about it and it seemed interesting to me. I bought the movie Incubus, with William Shatner (an old horror movie filmed in really, really horrible Esperanto), and that was really funny. So I decided to start learning Esperanto.

I wanted to learn it because I'm lazy, really. I wanted to learn some language, because I think language in general is interesting and pretty much want to learn them all. Still, the idea of learning a full 'real' language intimidated me: a daunting task. When I read about Esperanto, and its (seemingly) simple structure - no exceptions, completely following the rules, everything really simple - I decided to learn it.

But that's not really too intesting, I guess, is it?

So yes, I speak an "artificial language" (actually, two now - I'm learning ASL) - but I'm not so naive or idealistic to think that Esperanto will ever become a real worldwide language. Through using Esperanto, yes, I've talked with people from other countries, many of which do not speak English and without Esperanto I'd never have met. Esperanto lives, but it is tiny. Esperanto is for the Esperantists, and the rest of the world doesn't worry about it.

But I'm okay with that. Esperanto is its own community, which I belong to. (More or less.) I like knowing such a beautiful language, and being able to understand its literature, interesting poetry and great music (Persone, in my opinion, is really one of the best rock bands I've ever listened to).

I haven't read or written or listened to anything in Esperanto as often as I used to (other things are more interesting or important to me these days - namely work for my school and my job, my friends, boyfriend, etc.), but I still like Esperanto and I'm not ashamed of knowing it, by any means. I don't believe in the ultimate goal of Esperanto, being that everyone would speak it as a second language and be able to communicate, but I believe in Esperanto itsel and I like it for what it is: an interesting, if esoteric, language.

WHO WANTS TO BE A SPACE PIONEER? [Nov. 2nd, 2006|08:06 am]

Morning 2: 2669 words.

"Eleven other lucky contestants," he said in his critically acclaimed announcer voice, "chosen from all around the country, from all backgrounds and abilities, a cornucopia of this great country: and in four months, one of them will earn a coveted spot on the new space liner [some name]! Destined for the stars on a luxurious ten-month journey, our winner will work alongside scientists to discover new life along a promising galaxy just west of ours."
"West?"
Barry faltered. "Ah, well, that's what it says on the script. That's what they pay me to say."
"Tell me, Barry, in space, which way is west?"
"The...ah...opposite of east?"
Angela rolled her eyes. "Fair enough."

It's that time of year again...

Between the time in my free bell and barely 20 minutes before school in the morning, I was almost able to achieve the 1666 (and two thirds) words I need to write each day to keep up. If I work hard and I'm not lazy, I seriously could accomplish this even with my schedule being the way it is.

I'm at 1767 words right now. I have a whole post-it pad full of ideas, not bad ideas either, but I haven't settled on one thing yet. Right now it's the beginning of a story set in the not-too-distant future, about a girl and something or other about gender roles. It's crappy at the moment but the idea is just to write and eventually I'll get into the groove of things.
(That's the idea: looks good on paper at least...)

So is anyone else doing it this year? Casey, Omi, Lu, hm? Join in the anguish with me, to give up before Thanksgiving. Wooo!

[Voices |The Decemberists - The Crane Wife 2]

I just got back from helping Yessica. She's doing good with the letters we're teaching her, though I'm not entirely sure she gets it (she tries to call a foot 'frog', because on our flashcards it goes A, apple, B, banana, and F is for frog.).

She loves the hokey pokey though.

I was wearing my new shirt today (because come on, all the cool kids are doing it. And by 'all the cool kids' I mean Paula and Paula's friend Bethany.), and when I walked in to the elementary classroom the kids saw me and went nuts.
"Miss Joy, we're reading about cows and where milk comes from. The children see your shirt," the teacher explained.
I was amused.

One more thing of interest (...to me, not necessarily to anyone else). Jessica told me to tell Yessica to practice. I took a split second to think about it (it takes me a moment to 'switch'), and by the time "Ah...p- practica" came out of my mouth, my hands were already signing PRACTICE, as if that would get the idea across easier.

Can you even imagine anymore what it's like being illiterate? How can you keep information, if you can't write it down? How can ideas be transmitted when people are away from each other (outside of the room, across the miles, across the years even)? How much reading and writing is a part of my life, I can't even fathom a time when these thoughts and concepts and sounds were just lines and squiggles to me.

Think about all the steps you go through, reading the simplest sentence. The letters stand for sounds, the sounds come together and form words, the words stand for meanings in your head and combined with these other words, eventually you come out with something that means something. Something that can show you someone else's thoughts, or even change the world.

It's pretty amazing.

Mr. Ammerman asked me today about the AP test for Spanish. I was caught by surprise because I'd pretty much given up on doing that and hadn't thought about it for weeks. But I told him that if he can get it set up, I might as well give it a shot. It's another $80 of fees but that's well worth getting another credit under my belt, another class that I won't have to pay for next year.
That is, if I can do well on it. I may be one of the best people at Spanish in my class, but compared to students in other areas, I'm at least a year behind if not a lot more. And even if I know everything there is to know, it's a lot of thinking on my feet which I'll have to work on.

So that's that. Now I get to go off and get myself frustrated at the UCC library... have to practice with my group for the ASL midterm, and one of my group members is really bad at it... mutter mutter mutter.

[Voices |The Decemberists - The Crane Wife 1 And 2]

"Things happen for a reason."
I'm tired of hearing people say that. Things happen. That's it. People usually say it when bad things are happening: "It's the only thing that keeps me going, knowing that there's a reason for everything."

There is no grand reason for every occurance. Why should there be? Even if you believe there's a god, why would he concern himself with your own meaningless affairs?

The universe doesn't care that your dog died, or you lost your job, or whatever problems you encounter. Not to sound cold, because it obviously affects you and all the people you come into contact with. But things like that don't happen to punish you, or test you, or because it puts the pieces into place for something important happening. There's no end goal.

Things just happen, and you can't change that. Instead of moping about it or pretending you have no say in your fate, you can do something about the future, and improve your own situation.

That's how I see it.

Miscelany:

Today's Merriam-Webster word of the day email was obsequious. ^_^ I already knew that word - it's in the TMBG song "Turn Around". The email gave me some good insight though - the sequi part is from the Latin 'to follow' - whence sekvi, seguir, etc.

I have not given up on NaNo, per se - But I haven't written anything since Saturday. I haven't had any time. I'm going to put in 10 or 20 thou words during the break, hopefully, but I'm fairly sure I'm not going to actually finish. I'll wrap up the novel after the end of the month if it's convenient and post it. :]

I fell asleep at 7 last night, right after dinner. Seriously. This did let me manage to wake up a full hour early this morning, luckily, which gave me some time to do my Chemistry homework. This would be the first time I've finished my Chemistry homework on time since... ...ever.

Unfortunately counterracting this joyous event is the fact that I got a 69 (which is the very top point of the 'failing' level, for those of you with actually normal grading systems) on the last test. I tried hard, dammit.

The chart you gave me for trig functions is coming in handy, Warren. Our teacher gave us the same chart but it helped that I'd seen it before. =D

On Friday, Paula and I are going to Joseph-Beth to see her teacher's band play. Mwah. Mr. Howeverthefuckyouspellhisname is awesome, but I've never had him as a teacher. It's pronounced Reerden but I think it's spelled like Riordan or something.
I <3 bands that play in bookstores and libraries simply on principle anyway.

We're listening to Hakuna Matata and Esta Noche es para Amar in Spanish today! You may or may not remember me telling you that I burned El Rey León and La Bella y la Bestia onto CDs for Mr. Ammerman, but it's finally being followed up. Our class really likes singing [well, the front half of the class. The girls + one of the girls' boyfriend, basically] so it should be fun.

Today, being the last day before Thanksgiving weekend, should be fun. Should be. But it's not going to be. Our school started a new policy last year that every day before a break teachers had to have a graded assignment in class. So I've got 1 graded homework, 2 tests, 2 quizzes, and an essay. At the very least.

It's still going to be a fun day, if only for Spanish.

[Voices |Harry and the Potters - The Wrath of Hermione]

Huh. I really, really liked Goblet of Fire, but in my review for The Torch all I could come up with was complaints. I'll put up the article, and then the rest of my notes in my usual unorganized fashion, and then if anyone wants to we can have civilised discussion about it (lolz).

From the very first shot, of a hall of skulls, it's easy to tell that Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire is no kids' movie. Harry and company's fourth movie adventure keeps an even darker tone than the previous Prisoner of Azkaban, while still leaving room for plenty of jokes scattered throughout.
In Goblet of Fire, students from two other magical schools (Beauxbatons from France and Durmstrang from Bulgaria) arrive at Hogwarts to compete in the world-famous and sometimes deadly Triwizard Tournament. As the name suggests, three wizards traditionally compete in the tournament - one from each school. Hopeful participants over 17 years of age submit their names into the magical goblet of fire where they are later drawn. Mysteriously, however, after selecting the three champions Cedric Diggory, Fleur Delacour and Viktor Krum, a fourth name comes out of the goblet - underage Harry Potter.
From there, the champions must undertake a series of tasks to decide the winner of the Triwizard Cup. While the tournament and tasks provide much of the action in the movie, they are ultimately just another piece of the puzzle in the mystery of the new Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher, "Mad-Eye" Moody, and the revival of the evil Lord Voldemort.
The pace of the movie is often frantic, jumping from one major point in the book to another. Sure, it's difficult to condense 734 pages into 157 minutes, but it seems that some sequences drag on for too long when everything else is rushed. Also, because of all the cut and reduced subplots, characters like reporter Rita Skeeter and Hagrid's love interest Madame Maxine are rendered useless.
The lightning-fast action of the movie means that many of the charming touches from the previous movies have also been left out. There are no fanciful rearranging staircases or scenes of Quidditch in Goblet of Fire; the magic in this movie is much more serious. What can be found are killing curses and dragon fights.
In addition to subplots, Quidditch, and time to stop and breathe in between events in the movie, by far the most important thing forsaken due to lack of time is character development. The audience already knows Harry, Ron, Hermione and Dumbledore from the first three movies, but what about the Triwizard champions just introduced? What about the new heroes and villains? We never get to know the new characters accompanying Harry through most of the movie, so we never actually care about them.
Despite the pacing problems (which are understandable due to the nature of the book), director Mike Newell creates a completely new mood for this movie compared to Chris Columbus on the first two movies and Alfonso Cuarón on the third movie. It's a shame that there is such an inconsistent mood within the series because of the constant change of directors (yet another new director, David Yates, will be directing Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix), but Newell's style works spectacularly in this film.
Fans of the books will love seeing the most powerful scenes of J. K. Rowling's book brought to the big screen. Those who haven't read the books may find themselves confused at numerous unexplained clues to the ending, but should enjoy the ride just the same. Although it feels rushed, overall it is the best Harry Potter movie yet and it gets a 9 out of 10.

And the rest of the notes:
-Moody's eye looked really tacky. Ew.

-Neville was so lovable. Aww.

-Weasly Twins = Hawt hawt hawt

-Dragon chase was way too long, time that could have been spent in other areas or at least showing the other dragons. They kind of weirdly evaded showing the Chinese Fireball, not even the miniature dragon.

-The graveyard scene scared the ever-living shit out of me in the book, and the movie did a fairly good job with it. It could have been creepier though.

-I was about to cry after Cedric died, during Dumbledore's speech.

-I didn't care about Fleur at all in this movie, and neither did anyone else. Other than Ron's "OMGZORS I asked her out" bit, there was no one completely fawning over her like they probably should have been.

-The Death Eaters' KKK hats were creepy. They're dumb silly costumes but those fucking pillowcases never cease to chill me.

-Re:Fleur "She's as much a fairy princess as I am" = ROFL from me. But again, that never came out. Fleur just kind of sat there.

-I'll say it again, the pacing sucked. That's basically half of what I wrote during the movie on my post-it notes. "Things go by too quickly", "no real sense of time", "little room for character development"

Like I said, I've got so many complaints in my brain but I really did like the movie a lot. I've read some fan responses that the filmmakers aren't looking at the long-term enough, and they're probably right. We'll see how it works out when all is said and done.

[Voices |John Williams - Grievous Speaks To Lord Sidious]

It was time to do another survey, I dunno )

Oh, since I said I'd write about it later, I'll write about it now. Things of note from the weekend:

-Jehovah's Witnesses on bikes. Hahah. We saw them driving, these two kids in suits with backpacks biking around a neighborhood. It was Dad who IDed them and I never would have thought of it, but he's probably right. I don't know, amusing.

-Friday night went to a thing at Elyssa's church. Jessie was supposed to be there too, but she wasn't. : ( I did have fun, discounting the few moments of discomfort that comes with the territory of going to something at someone's church. After the volleyball game we all sat and listened to someone preach for a while, and he spelled out the fact that this whole event was basically to convert teenagers. And he got some, too. A little creepy.

-The start of the evening was a Lady Bearcats volleyball game, which I enjoyed a lot more than I thought I would. Mostly because we were right next to this huge cheering section which called out specific things at times: whenever the other team served, they would shout "Noonan!" (??) to make them mess up, and when they did and we got a point for the serve, they would pound on the chairs and count out how many 'noonans' we had gotten. Also whenever the ball went just barely over the net, hitting the top, from the other side, they would should "I hate that rule!" (and conversely, when the Bearcats hit it to the other side touching the top of the net, "I love that rule!"). Now, we all know that I love things with audience participation, so this was right up my alley. It was awesome, and much funnier than your run-of-the-mill "Let's go Bearcats" type of callbacks.

-Then we went to Sports Plus, which is this huge sports and game center. I played DDR (or, 'Pump it Up', a DDR clone with diagonal buttons and a center button instead) for the first time and sucked yay. There was an inflatable obstacle course, and Elyssa and I were doing it and she fell while climbing. She had to sit down and eventually go to the hospital. She either sprained or broke her ankle and left for the rest of the night. D=

I also played Laser Tag for the first time ever. I really really enjoyed it. It was stimulating, but it wasn't exhausting or anything. Fun yes. I'm going to have to go to Scallyway Tag sometime.

Then we went bowling and stuff. I bowled a 31, hellz yeah. We got back home at 6:30a. For real. =D

-On Saturday daytime, I volunteered at a show choir thing at school for NHS service hours. One of the choirs did a Chicago-themed show!!! And it was awesome.

-Today we saw Zathura. It has everything - Time travel, incest, robots and a gerbil, but it still managed to be not nearly as good as Jumanji. The CG space sky was preeeetty though.

And that's all for now.

~Joy didn't do any homework this weekend. Oops.

MAN, I must have gone through half my ballpoint's ink tonight.

The result (a handful of designs cropped and contrast'd from my English folder):

Inking crap is very very relaxing. And this lavender sharpie is totally my new best friend. It's like a purple highlighter only with a finer tip.

FUCK ENGLISH ESSAYS
o_o;;
No seriously, where did the weekend go?
Friday evening: I think I slept through most of this
Saturday: Woke up 8 or 9a-ish, kinda trudged around, used Internet, read The Long Halloween, went to PKI
Sunday: ??? Woke up 10ish, I think, but the day just kind of evaporated.

Edit 5a:
Hmm. Just wrote an essay. It won't make any sense 3 hours from now but at the moment it seems really insightful.
It's about how truth doesn't mean anything when you're dealing with people, and society, and laws, and everything entirely made up of humans. The only place truth matters is in reality, nature, actual objects sitting in front of you. It's part "I have faith in science and nothing else" and it's part "I hate people *hides in corner*".
And a big part of it is "I wrote an essay at 5 in the morning with little to no sleep".

Half hour before I leave for school... [Sep. 29th, 2005|06:13 am]

Let's see how long it takes you to find the error in this sentence:

"Those in Salem who confessed to witchcraft in Salem were free while the people who did not confess were hanged."

-_-
I'm not tired at all, I just can't think. And all my work is piling up on me at once... I thought I was pretty on top of things but now I realise I'm not.

I WILL read the next book we study in English.
I WILL do all my math homework at lunch so I don't get a detention.
I WILL complete my Journalism stories in time for layout...probably.

I will print out my English essay right now.

OK this word is awesome. XD
apophasis \uh-PAH-fuh-sis\ noun

: the raising of an issue by claiming not to mention it

In programming now... A bit bored but no more than usual. Spanish sucked today. We spent the whole period... reviewing "gustar". And everyone acted as if they'd never encountered such a thing before. For fuck's sake, did they go through last year in a coma or something?

Meh. Whatever.
Journalism articles are going smoothly. I think this is the first time in a year since I've been on-schedule with that. :P My movie review is an awesome excuse to spend Journalism periods sniffing around IMDB for Red Eye information. Researching the new laptop labs at school (which is my other article) is easy, if only because I already sent out my interview emails. There's no other information about them out there other than from teachers. Tomorrow I'll interview some students about it at choir.

I'm going to print out some new pages of La Eta Princo, I thik, and read them during Spanish. People think that's what language it's in anyway. =P

uhmmmmm
I want to be at home and stuff. I want to curl up and check SD and then get my Journalism crap out of the way and then probably take a nap. Or go for another walk. The weather is nice.
Boring. Boring life.

~Joy, bored, yadda yadda
