[Voices |Jekyll & Hyde - Facade]

"I had an image of you in my head earlier. I thought about how a mexican version of Joy would go "Ole!!!!" all the time rather than "YAY!!!" It made me laugh."

Going to Nyack was fun. School is killer. Thanksgiving will be boring.
The further the year goes on, the less I care about AP Calculus. Or journalism, for that matter. I've completely blown it off. It's not a class, so I won't bother to write anything for it. We're two months late with our first issue, I'm supposed to write three stories but I haven't written anything. Worst editor-in-chief ever.

Whatever though. Nyack was fun.
Went with Danielle, and Joshua. Joshua I met once before but I didn't really remember him.
Huge goddamn nerd, by the way. He made a ton of references to a ton of things, many of which I got. And he likes Jonathan Coulton. People are not supposed to be like that in real life!

So yeah. We saw TMBG. Twice in one day; the kids' show in the afternoon and the 16+ show at night. Yay.
So we went with Danielle's boyfriend Mike, who has seen...something like... 130 TMBG shows? He has their signatures tattooed on his ankles. He is internet-famous and arguably Their biggest fan.
It was a little weird. He'd tell me what the next song was just by the start of the band's introduction speech to it.
We didn't go into the city at all, and even if we had planned to there wasn't any time for it. Ah well.

It was fun. Met some interesting people. Listened to some good music, not only from the concert but from Danielle's and Josh's extensive CD collections. Became a better driver. Got tired and giggly and cursed like a sailor. Lost a lot of sleep, which I'm still trying to make up for. Lost a lot of hours at work and a lot of spare time.
I'm glad to be home. All in all though, I'm glad I did it too. It was fun.

I probably have some photos on my camera, but they likely didn't turn out. I'll be pleasantly surprised if any of them did.

Tired now. Don't have anything else to write about. Going to bed.

~Joy

A collaboration between 3 awesome Johns [Dec. 17th, 2005|01:10 pm]

[Voices |Polaris - Hey Sandy]

I decided, in case anyone was avidly wondering, to watch Venue Songs instead of Clockwork Orange last night. Mostly because I was getting tired and since it was a bunch of music videos, I could stop at any point.

Actually, it turned out to be just over a half hour so it was a good choice anyway. Here's a video-by-video review. Take note that I've never heard most of the venue songs before:

1. Dallas - Trees. What on Earth? What. On. Earth. This wasn't a good choice as the starting track (though I guess they were put on chronologically) because it's completely different from all the other songs and videos in mood. It's creepy and crazy. I don't really like it.

2. Albany - The Egg - I *love* this one. The song is pretty catchy, and the video is amazing. It's everything a TMBG video should be. Really snazzy. I heard someone compare it to the Purple Toupee video, and it is similar in style but only to a point.

3. Los Angeles - House of Blues - The Lads and The Blokes. Huh. The animation reminded me of Damn Good Times, which makes sense because they were done by the same person.

4. Anaheim - House of Blues - The song is interesting. It was one of the two or three venue songs that I'd already heard. Still kind of weird.

5. Vancouver - Richard's on Richards - This is a GREAT, catchy song that I wish could have been longer. The video fits the song and has a nice concept but it gets old after a while. The girl is cute.

6. Pittsburgh - Mr. Small's - ADORABLE. Animated Johns are always cute but these are so stylized and I just want to hug them forever.

7. Asheville - The Orange Peel - Haahahaha. How cute. Please allow me to introduce myself, I'm the orange peel.

8. Glasgow - The Garage - Eh. This song features spelling out of THEGARAGE, and I could not for the life of me figure out what they were trying to spell until they actually said 'the garage'.

9. Asbury Park - The Stone Pony - The song is very hard to understand. The video is perfect. The Johns' expresssions are great throughout.

10. Brooklyn - Celebrate Brooklyn - I LOVE IT. I would probably understand it better if I were a Brooklynite, but I still love it. The video is simply charming, in a collage/cutout style. It's like viewing a prehistoric animutation.

Bonus videos:

11. Damn Good Times - I love this song and everything about this song, from the great storytelling lyrics to the impossible-to-sing-along-with (but-I'm-getting-better-at-it) chorus. The video is weird but fun, but I wish it had more to do with the song. It starts out great and then goes off on some creepy vampire tangent.

12. Experimental Film - Good to have it on DVD. It's cute. I'm not really a Homestar fan.

13. Bastard Wants to Hit Me - I love this song also. The vocoder is bloody perfect and the tune is way<3too<3catchy for the random subject matter. The video is new and interesting. The animation is really fun and I watched the video online before I got the DVD - Seeing it on my TV, I noticed that the characters are semi-transparent. It gives it a really nice look.

14. I'm All You Can Think About - Amusing song, yes. Linnell animated the video. Teee.

After the videos, there are some bumps from the TMBG webpage by John Hodgman telling viewers to tune in next week. One even tells viewers to buy the DVD. There are three or four of these in a row that are essentially the same and they get old fast. It would have been better to leave them in a bonus section rather than have them play at the end of the DVD.

In between all the videos are more interstitials with Hodgman, and these are great. They feature Hitchhiker's Guide-esque computer animations and John Hodgman being himself and awesome like he is.

~Joy would, were she reviewing it for the Torch, give Venue Songs an 8/10 - it could have been longer but the songs were all great.

Alert to the ones who have been asleep the past 3/4 of the year:
I love TMBG. Today's reason:
Our warehouse is buzzing with Venue Songs DVD/CD set orders and special Holiday bundle orders (and we say Holiday because it freaks out Bill O'Reilly) There is still plenty of time to get you orders in for Xmas!
Emphasis is Theirs. Hahahah.

I am wearing my Snowman shirt. It is a good day indeed.

Yesterday was pretty messed up. I got home at around 3:30 after the NHS meeting and hung around, ate and played some Katamari. Finally got the moon past 200m; should be able to finish the level soon. XD When I emerged from the basement it was already past 6. I snuggled up with a blanket in front of the TV and was pushed into a daze, awaking at 9. After this nap I found myself even more tired. I went up to bed and set an alarm on my clock for 4:30a, in hopes of doing any homework I had, as well as a back-up alarm at 5a.

I went to bed and fell asleep very quickly. I woke at 4:30 to an irritatingly persistent beep. This is how my just-woken brain works: I imagined and believed I had already turned the alarm off, but it wouldn't stop. Finally, after at least two minutes, I realised that I wasn't actually awake when I turned the alarm off so I reached over to the nightstand and actually deactivated the alarm. Went back to bed. The same thing happened a half hour later.

Time moves too quickly.

...Hmm. So I got the new version of Firefox on the school comp, because the old version got deleted off it, and now there's a shitload of clicking problems. When I click a link, nothing will happen unless I'm actually on the text, forcing me to focus the mouse point on one pixel which sucks majorly. Also, the h-scroll is invisible! Ah waaaaah??

The staff there was really nice and while it may be a slight annoyance to them to move the 4 copies back, I hope it will make them smile. I was wearing my TMBG shirt and the woman asked me about it and the guy working with her knew, and the woman said she saw Barenaked Ladies during the summer. So I think they'll get the joke rather than be angry.

The Beach; The MP3s; a spiffy pictah [Jul. 31st, 2005|03:07 pm]

[Voices |John Mayer - 3X5]

Huhm, what? I fell asleep sometime yesterday afternoon and still managed to sleep past 1 in the afternoon TODAY. I really don't understand.

Yesterday Dad, Paula and I (we never seem to do anything with Mom. Actually, I never do. Dad and Paula do plenty with her at church, I guess.) went to the Beach for Dad's company picnic. It was pretty comical going in... We're used to going to the local theme park, King's Island, which has its own waterpark connected to it, and everything's really huge and pretty. The Beach's sign had a small announcement sign underneath it like all the fast food restaurants have, and if you'd blink you would miss the entrance. Inside it was nicer though.

We all had fun. I think I got sunburn on my scalp and the tops of my feet, but I managed to slather the rest of me in sunscreen as a precautionary measure.

So now I actually do have some freckles. Tons on my arms, but none on my face. Huh.

I was running on about 3 hours of sleep through this whole thing. I was rather pleased with myself because, as is evident from my first paragraph, my body usually prefers its sleeping time in massive, schedule-wrecking chunks. I've found that being more active (running around in huge swimming pools, dancing, what have you) neutralizes my typical amount of sloth. That I've just figured this out after 5 years of living in a bit of a tired daze is a testament to just how much time I spend at the computer.

Oh, I listened to part of the TMBG show on the car rides to and from The Beach. I kept giggling and feeling the need to stomp and scream while listening to the recording. It was great, it really was.

I'd be interested in knowing how the decide which speaker to connect with which channel on the recording...like, there were two mics to pick up the audience: one on (from audience perspective) the left, [where I was standing], and one on the right. The download makes use of this, so you get distinct screams from both the left and right headphones.
So basically, one could choose to switch these two channels around in accordance to either audience perspective or band perspective. Just curious.

So, the TMBG show was my first ever experience with paid downloading (though certainly not my first expecrience with legal downloading - there's a difference. Many of the smaller bands I listen to, and some of the larger ones, offer free mp3s of their music on their websites.)

My opinion:
-Ease of use - The TMBG download service was extremely easy to use; you just signed up with an email address and password, input your address and a few other things, and your credit card number, and you were good to go. Then you were taken to a page with links to all of the files, as well as an option to download them all as a set.

The 'download all' option did not work for me, and the help guide on the site said in a nutshell "IE sucks, go get Firefox." However, the single-file downloads worked fine.

-Quality of files - All of the mp3s are 256kbps quality, and sound great on my headphones as well as computer speakers. The recordings are obviously much better than amateurly recorded live shows I've listened to before, and listening to the show on headphones made things sound much clearer than I heard them when we were at the actual show. The prominence of the audience noise is not as stong as I would have liked (I consider the crowd cheering, screaming things out, and singing along with the band one of the neater aspects of live recordings), but it varies by track.
Interesting to note that the places where the tracks break sucks. The show is unedited as far as I can tell, so it would have been fine as one huge mp3 (if very unmanageable). The tracks generally break after the commentary about the next song (which leaves the listener very confused if they listen to the songs individually), but sometimes break right while Flans (or Linnell) is speaking. This is very distracting.
Also I forgot to take out the 2-second pause between each song on my CD-burning program, so that's my fault.

-To compare with a CD - This is the first and foremost reason that I have never paid for downloads before: I like CDs! I like having a hard copy and a booklet and shiny, glossy cover art and a sturdy jewel case and disc art and the whole thing. I'd rather pay $15 for a CD I can hold in my hand than $10 for an album that might be whisked away at my computer's convenience when it sporadically goes on a deleting spree.
TMBG downloads are available for 2 or 3 days after you download the first file, which worries me a little bit. I'd prefer a service where you can always download the files you've already paid for.

My TMBG purchase, of course, is unavailable on CD and its uniqueness (and personal significance) is the reason I bought it. Included is some sparse art in a PDF, with a tracklisting and a couple credits about the recording. I printed it out and it completely fails to fit in my thin CD-R jewelcase, but that's all right.
I generally associate the slim jewelcases and the CD-R faces and all of this amateur-looking stuff as something that some random guy has done, and also with illegal music - It all just looks so less special than an album, that you've gone to the record store and bought.

I do not download music because there's something special about the downloading part in itself. I don't download music because I don't want to go to the store and buy an album - I download music because it's free, and usually because it's not worth it to me to buy an album for one song. If I wanted an album, and it's easily accessible for me to find and buy at a reasonable price (<$20), I will buy it.

For all these reasons, I do not think I will use an online pay-download service for albums I can just as easily buy as an actual CD. However, I may and probably will buy a TMBG live show or exclusive album from their download store every once in a while when I have some extra money. The process is simple enough, I'm supporting a band I love, and the files are simple, unDRM'd as far as I can tell, mp3s with no limits.

Bottom line:

~Joy needs to re-learn how to draw sometime.

I had already gotten wind of the existence of the poll a few days earlier when I read that Leonardo DiCaprio had been knocked out of the No. 1 spot by a dark horse named Hank the Angry, Drunken Dwarf. The on-line voters, it seemed, had a new, more evolved definition of beauty that gave low marks to standard celebrity good looks.
To include a photo of Linnell: http://www.tmbw.net/wiki/index.php/Image:Linnell.jpg
Have I yet mentioned, that I love the internet? Because I really truly do.

Saw HHG again today, 4th time. We were alone for a while, until two guys came in just before the opening credits. The guy working the projector was pretty late in starting the movie, and he had hair like Drew's. Because it started so late, a guy and his kids came in during the last scene.

I convinced Paula to ask her friend about seeing Rocky Horror at the Esquire. You know, now they show Napoleon Dynamite alternating Saturdays with RHPS?! It's a strange world.

PS: Totally fucked up on etymology.

[Voices |They Might Be Giants - Bastard Wants to Hit Me]

PICTURES!
http://flickr.com/photos/joyuna/sets/633434/
Lots of pictures. 42 pictures, incidentally.

For those who've not been paying attention: Last night my sister Paula and I (along with my dad, who drove but didn't see the show) went down to Louisville to Lebowskifest, a convention-type thing for the cult film The Big Lebowski. Why would we do this, you ask? Well, They Might Be Giants was playing there, and seeing how the frequency of such a thing occuring within driving distance of us is roughly once every 24 years, I was bursting to go. So we did! Lovely when things work out like that.

We left at around 4:30 and drove. And drove. We drove for quite some time... Yech. In fact, we got to Louisville just in time for us to get lost, and we wound up in line 10 minutes past 7. This all worked out just fine for us though, because no matter how late we were, the event was even later.

The gate opened at maybe 7:15. We waved Dad goodbye... He apparently was reading Harry Potter and the Half-blood Prince the entire time we were there.

Paula and I got in and we found the ampitheatre (...that is way too cool of a word.). There was a large, grassy hill with stone benches set out in rows, and at the bottom of the hill was a grassy area and the stage. We sat at a bench in the first row and waited.

A very substantial part of our time was waiting. Long story short, everything was more than an hour behind schedule and Corn Mo came on past 8:00.

Corn Mo, TMBG's opening act, is someone whom I knew nothing about except that he played the accordion, and accordions are always cool. He was all right, and pretty funny, but not much to write home about music-wise. Paula didn't care for him at all.

We waited some more and sat in the grass after Corn Mo. Somehow, soon, everyone in the grass stood up at the same time. There was no announcement or unusual activity that I could discern, we all just kind of did it. Sure enough, the Giants hit the stage soon after.

...Do I even need to say that it was fucking awesome? I mean, seriously.

They started with the "They Might Be Giants National Anthem", Clap Your Hands. A pretty unmemorable song, if you ask me, but I suppose it's good for getting the energy going and audience participation is always fun. Also, during this song Flans did a bit from some line-dancing song whose name escapes me but it always played at lame dance events - "Everybody clap your hands! *clapclap clapclap clapclap clapclap*". If anyone could tell me what this song was, I'd be able to rest easy at night.

From there they went straight into Istanbul, and then Damn Good Times, which is a damn good song which I wish I knew well enough to sing along to. I sang along to absolutely everything I could.

Concert atmosphere is like nothing you can experience anywhere else. Hundreds and hundreds of strangers all around you singing and dancing and screaming and having just as great of a time as you are, with a band in front having an equally great time.

They played Alphabet of Nations, which pleased me to no end. I was one of the only people who sang along. ;D I always kept getting stuck on NORWAY. Fucking Norway.

They played most of their popular songs, but there were enough other songs thrown in the mix to make it feel not like it was just some greatest hits compilation. Interesting one song that they didn't play - Boss of Me! They've played a short version of it at most of their recent shows, but not this time.

In between songs, they gave a warning to those who had flown in from out of town - Louisville Slugger bats are not suitable carryon luggage at airports. XD

During The Guitar (replacing "Jim" with "Dan", of course), Flans told everyone to conga (including and specifically shy people). Several conga lines formed and I got thrown into one as they segued into an awesome song that I wasn't expecting, No One Knows My Plan. As the line disbanded, I actually got a better position to the stage than I had before -- Originally I was on the far left three people back, and I ended up two back and in the center. Rawk.

Through the entire show, I was obviously taking pictures. My camera SUCKS and told me that its batteries were dead like two songs in to the show. "Yeah right," I said, and turned it back on and it stayed on for long enough to take a pic or two and then turned itself off again. It was annoying as hell but at least it did work. And I got some pictures, regardless of how crappy they turned out.

During Ana Ng, someone was shooting off fireworks in the park. I have no idea why. So...
"When I was driving once, I saw this painted on a bridge -- Fireworks!
I don't want the world, I just want your half -- Fireworks!"
...it was quite funny at the time. I had no idea what was going on.
"Don't be afraid of the gunshots. We're from New York, we're used to it."

They fit as much awesomeness as they absolutely could into the show. Polk, The Sun, Experimental Film, She's an Angel, Bastard Wants to Hit Me, FINGERTIPS!

Fingertips seems to me like it would be one of those songs that sounds perfectly brilliant on the album, but wouldn't work out live (See: Weird Al, "Albuquerque")-- It's 20-some song hooks, all smushed together with an amalgam of different styles, voices and instruments. They did it though, and they did it awesomely. It is the PERFECT song to end a show with, right after Corn Mo came out and they did Hocus Pocus. It was all just really wonderful.

I got an orange They Might Be Giants ringer tee with the Snowman on it. I dare you to find a cooler t-shirt than that.

So I was sweaty, tired and dehydrated and had a 2 hour+ car trip ahead of me home, but holy crap did I ever have a blast. The end.

"We've never played in 100% humidity before."

And to close, I leave ye with my favourite quote ever:

~"Dan Miller has his foot placed firmly on the wah-wah pedal, ladies and gentlemen. You know what that means: Children's songs that will fuck you up. Let me say that again: Children's songs that will FUCK. YOU. UP."

[Voices |They Might Be Giants - Where Your Eyes Don't Go]

And for people who don't care about my evolution babbling:

Lincoln really is the awesome album that everyone raved about. It's not better by a huge amount than Apollo 18, but I do think it is the best of all the TMBG albums I've heard so far (and there are only a couple I haven't heard yet! Whoa!)

If you're gonna get some TMBG, you should definitely pick it up.

[Voices |Jonathan Coulton - Mandelbrot Set]

I finally listened to the first disc of my new TMBG set... The actual album part of it was pretty mediocre (though as always, it will grow on me the more I listen), but some of the bonus tracks were FANTASTIC. I'll be spreading some around whether you like it or not (though I'd prefer to send them to someone who liked them).

Anyway, time to steal a meme from Lu. Jej!

Does anyone read these things, ever? )

I went to sleep at 3 this morning. I ended up waking at 7. Whaaa? Fucking caffeine. When I want it, we're fresh out, but when I try to get to sleep we haven't any juice or anything non-caffeinated besides milk and water and then I get all messed up.

This:
http://www.tmbw.net/wiki/index.php/No_One_Knows_My_Plan
equals the single best song to dance around in your underwear to. I know this.

Also, I was right, I think! The dude at SomethingAwful (I might have only told one or two people about this? It was one of my random "Hey lookit this" IM sprees) at least does not hate TMBG as he says. =]

So, looks like I’m finally writing about They Might Be Giants this week. It’ll be fun for a few reasons: first of all, a bunch of people have asked me to do it, so I’m happy to oblige. Second, it means I get to listen to a bunch of old They Might Be Giants records, and it’s impossible to deny that listening to old They Might Be Giants records is a good time. Third, They Might Be Giants fans ought to be able to take a joke, so hopefully they’ll enjoy this and won’t send me too many e-mails calling me a faggot bastard.

And it absolutely was funny.
Their fan base would consist of all the outcasts nerdy enough to tolerate them, mirroring the sad rejects-sticking-together dynamic of their friendship.
:D
If anthropologists of the future ever sit down to categorize the sundry varieties of nerd and require as precise a definition for “spaz” as possible, they need only listen to the drum machine/guitar intro to “Don’t Let’s Start.”
'Strue. But it's still fucking awesome.
They Might Be Giants have always had an appeal to children similar to that of a van full of puppies...

Ummm... I think I should sleep now, maybe?

[Voices |Alkaline Trio - Over At The Frankenstein Place]

ABSOLUTE ONE O'CLOCK IN THE MORNING RANDOMNESS.

Winamp on shuffle, I hear a familiar intro.
I happily anticipate Susan Sarandon singing in a way-too-high-pitched voice.
Am met with a dude. Man, what a letdown. I enjoy all these punk covers though. =P

On Linguaphiles, there's a thoroughly snobby bashing of someone who wants to get their name tattooed upon themselves in an exotic script. As mean and pretentious as it is, I *love* reading it.

I finished one of the library books! Yay for me! Yes, I read over 300 pages about ancient deciphered and undeciphered scripts. You wouldn't think there'd be a lot to write about undeciphered scripts, but there is. I still have to finish Last Chance to See.

I laughed:
"This is a song about a clock that doesn't fucking work"
http://www.tmbw.net/wiki/index.php/Four_Of_Two
Maybe just 'cos it was a song on their "children's" album and swearing plus children equals funny. Maybe 'cos Linnell doesn't often swear, AFAIK.

A countdown to shows when TMBG were touring for their first album... Very creepy, I think:
Countdown to the program! Checklist:
10! Your ten fingers reach into the air.
9! You wiggle your nine toes in anticipation.
(Ladies and gentlemen, may I have your attention. They Might Be Giants have just crash-landed their glass bottom car into the control tower at Jim Baker International Airport.)
8! Already you've forgotten what you ate for dinner. A creeping numbness consumes you.
(This just in, the human egg has been sighted plummeting from the sky. Scientists standing by to assure us that nothing is wrong have already been found murdered in their laboratories.)
7! Seven members of the band They Might Be Giants have quit the group over bitter disagreements about the introduction to tonight's show.
6! You begin to feel six.
(Watch Professor Psycho-Fuckup, arrested and convicted of gate-crashing the show tonight, has hung himself by his watchband in his prison cell. He is listed in perfect condition!)
5! Your five senses swell as you realize that history is not being made tonight, rather it is being consumed by a creeping numbness standing next to you.
4! No one seems to know what this is for.
(Overturned tractor trailers rubbernecking bumper to bumper!)
3! Only three seconds remain until They Might Be Giants hits the stage over and over again.
2! It's time 2 sit back and make way for the
1! band that can overcome the
0! in their bank account. I don't mean to be the
-1! but you'd be
-2! if it weren't for the fabulous show you're about to enjoy. Ladies and gentlemen, make way for They Might Be Giants!

Any formatting problems, I completely blame on This Might Be a Wiki. 'Cos I do that.

One other TMBG-obsessing related thing!
I am proud to announce that I can finally tell the Johns apart. :P
Aye, I can now listen to any TMBG recording and tell you, with 75% accuracy, which member of They Might Be Giants is the one singing. Heck yes.
If my ears fail me telling apart their voices, there is always a handy shibboleth, if I'm using that really cool word correctly: Flans writes more love-type songs, and Linnell writes more "WTF?"-type songs. It's as easy as that! ;]

'Kay, I'm done. Be glad that these weren't posted all as separate entries, 'cos they might have been.
