I have $40 in my Amazon gift certificate account.
Freaking AWESOME.

Today in math, Rashikh and Paul (who are in the AP calculus class right after our class) came up to me and asked me if I was going on the NHS trip to Chicago. I said yes and they were ecstatic at my reply. It was strange but I felt special...?

Went to the library today. Got a few comics (Hush) and a book on hieroglyphs. I like the library; I haven't been in a long time. Then again I haven't had time to read in a long time.

We're writing short stories in English, finally. Mine is turning out quite WONDERFULLY. It's futuristic and slightly dystopian and I've got the entire world worked out in my head but I'm exposing it very slowly. It may be confusing. I find it just plain awesome.

My silly putty came today - but that's another entry, when I have my camera hooked up so I can upload photos. 'Bye.

[Voices |Tanya Chua - Drops of Jupiter]

Went to the Anderson library today. Came out with a stack of books large enough to be two stacks of books!

Superman: Man of Steel, vol 2: This is another copy of the same book I turned back in to the library today but didn't finish. God I suck.

Essential X-Men, vol 5: There are FIVE VOLUMES of these big honking paperbacks? Ho-lee crap. I didn't notice the number when I checked it out.

The Free Lunch - Spider Robinson: Spider's cool. I read a couple Callahan books forever ago and loved the computer game. I kinda just grabbed it because it was right near the next book I was looking for...

The Sparrow - Mary Doria Russell: I think The Tensor wrote something on this one. SF, religion, linguistics, it's all good.

A Clockwork Orange - Anthony Burgess: Can you BELIEVE this is the first time I've found this book?! It's been on my library list for as long as I've had a library list. I've gone to the libraries every month or two. And now I've finally found it. -_-;;

River Out of Eden - Richard Dawkins: Yay! It was right on the shelf next to Of Pandas and People...

Totally my new favourite time-waster:
Googlefight!

Today happened this:

This afternoon I didn't fall asleep. In fact, I went to the library. Still NO NOVELS I wanted to read and no Dawkins either and there weren't even any books on ASL! I mean, what the heck.
I came out with some comics, as usual:

Death: The High Cost of Living
Batman: The Long Halloween
Bizarro Comics

Bizarro is awesome. I'm like 100 pages into it already because I couldn't stop reading. And how, honestly, can you not pick up something with Matt Groening art on the cover?
It's a bunch of short bits by all different cartoonists about DC superheroes - and it's the perfect title for me because I have just-specific-enough knowledge of everything. The jokes aren't hideously obscure and I'm familiar with all of the characters.

Long Halloween I picked up because I think it was recommended at some point in time, but also because it was written by Jeph Loeb, the patron saint of the two best/worst threads on the whole of Superdickery. Observe, if you dare:

http://s8.invisionfree.com/Superdickery_Forum/index.php?showtopic=831
http://s8.invisionfree.com/Superdickery_Forum/index.php?showtopic=1111

And Death... Neil Gaiman is awesome. The end.

Also today, Spanish was boringish so I whipped out my new omgsecret boring-class weapon!! ... My creased, stained and markered-up-to-hell copy of La Korvo (The Raven, Eo).
I didn't get all that far, but I understood all but maybe 1 or 2 words and it gave me chills. It is AT LEAST as good as the original, evoking exactly the same mood. Rhythm is spot on too.

I'ma crack open a can of Mountain Dew and do my Chem work now. I actually understood well the problems we did last night, but I wasn't concious enough this morning to know if we've moved on or not. Probably have.

~Joy will then become sidetracked by The Daily Show in an hour and a half, probably write an update on that, read what other people think about it on Pharyngula, congratulate self for actually remembering how to spell Pharyngula, fall asleep after reading some more Bizarro Comics, wake up 4a and run around in circles until school begins.

[Voices |The Possums - Stepping Stone]

I have returned from les bibliotheques! With BOOKS!
Though not, perhaps, the books I was expecting to be back with. Out of 7 checkouts, 6 are comics and 1 is a novel. A children's novel, at that. I should be ashamed of myself (I'm not).

First, from the Anderson library, my one narrative find:

Spring-Heeled Jack, by Philip Pullman. Just because I feel the need for completionism regarding PP's works. I still haven't been able to find the 2nd Sally Lockhart book again. =(

And the comics...

Man of Steel, vol. 2. I read the first volume last time and am picking up where I left off, presumably. All well and good.

Kingdom Come. This has been treated as one of their 'holy grails' on Superdickery, in the manner of The Dark Knight Returns and Watchmen. It's big, pretty, and has gorgeous art that seems marred by the uncreative lettering. Plus it's entirely out of continuity, so it will have no chance of helping me understand SD forum conversations, other than familiarizing me with characters.

From the Union Township library...

Superman: Whatever happened to the man of tomorrow? Yes, this is the book that made me want to go to the UT library in the first place. Sad, isn't it? At less than 50 pages it isn't much larger than a single comic itself. But it's reportedly really good and since Alan Moore is a writer (Watchmen, V for Vendetta, League of Extraordinary Gentlemen...need I say more?), it should be a good read.

Red Son. Alternate title: Superman is a Commie. This'll be interesting indeed.

Maus: Volumes I and II. I had no idea this was two volumes. If it's actually three volumes, I will be sad because there's nothing worse than an unfulfilled ending. This is something I've been wanting to read even before I got into comics. I've read plenty of stories with parallels to the holocaust (V for Vendetta, anyone?), now it's time to read one that was actually inspired by it.

No manga, and only one "real" (term used very loosely, ie non-comic) book. I'm surprised at my findings. 20 titles rot on my year-old list unfound, but 5 funnybooks I've been looking for for just a month or two magically appear.

I will be satiated for now.

~Joy will either read or sleep now. Doesn't know which.

Yes, went to the library again. And I got:

Batman: The Dark Knight Returns
Superman: Man of Steel, Vol. 1
JLA: Zatanna's Search (mainly because Zatanna is cool and I'm all OO PRETTY, Girl superhero!)
Megatokyo, vol. 1 (Exclusively because it's on Thinkgeek. I don't even know what it's about)

And, yes, a book! A real one!
Mark Dunn - Ella Minnow Pea. It should be interesting.
I'm still reading Tales from Watership Down, anyway.

My current comicbook-reading strategy: Having finished Crisis on Infinite Earths, which effectively reset everything in DC's universe(s), I'm going to read forward from there, starting with Batman and Superman. I had no idea I was going to have this strategy until I got to the library and found that they had these titles that I recognized, but whatever. The Dark Knight Returns is supposed to be really good.

Last night, Paula, Dad, Paula's friend Danielle and I went to a Reds game. It was nice and fun, like baseball games always are. Through those three hours I would expect myself to be incurably bored, but I wasn't. I had a good time.
And we won omgyay Reds!
We have a player, Wily (pronounced Willy) Mo Peña. The tilde is on his uniform, but on every other piece of printed material it is gone. THE TILDE DON'T GET NO RESPECT. D= I<3~.

Think I'll be scanning stuff now. Ta ta.

~Joy likes books, and is well prepared for Chicago - Dad says that we'll probably be on the plane for just as long as it would've taken driving, since we're going to Atlanta first 'cos we've got buddy tickets from my uncle.

Today's library haul:

Chobits, Volume 2
Blue Monday - The Kids are Alright
Blue Monday - Absolute Beginners (These are comics that were recommended on MRFH. I was quite surprised to find them.)
Richard Adams - Tales from Watership Down
Ray Bradbury - From the Dust Returned

We were SPONTANEOUS and decided to go to the Amelia branch of the library, rather than the Union Township one we usually go to. It has a larger selection of comics, mostly manga, and has some different books which is good. It's where I found Last Chance to See. However, while I was searching the 'card catalog' (now completely Internet-ized), I noticed that some of the books that have been on my list are now finally at Union Township... I think Fate hates me. That's okay. I have enough to keep me satisfied for two weeks, though I might go through all the comics this afternoon if I'm bored enough.

[Voices |Josh Woodward - Soft Orange Glow]

I spent three-and-a-half bloody hours today in the library. I was there with Stautberg and some people from League of Leaders, to educate people about school funding. We set up a table with flyers and were ready to answer questions.

One person came in the entire time. One. Three hours.
The extra half hour was me waiting for my ride. I left the library with five new books and an increased desire to learn how to drive.

Oh well. It gave me a lot of good reading time that otherwise would have been spent sleeping, probably. The spoils of the outing:

Last Chance to See - Yes! Finally another DNA book for me to tear through! This thing was at the Amelia library, which out of three local-ish libraries is the only one I don't regularly visit. I've been looking for this for a long time.
It's a book about endangered animals and conservation and stuff; I hope it doesn't end up being too preachy.

Starship Titanic - DNA didn't actually write this one; Terry Jones (of Monty Python) did. But it came from DNA's idea - y'know (if you've read whichever book it's in) when Zaphod finds the ship that's been shut down because they don't have moist towelettes, and the robots wake the passengers up every year or whenever to serve them coffee? That's Starship Titanic.

Green Arrow - Quiver - Yay comic! Yay rabidly liberal superheroes! Yay Kevin Smith (yes, *that* Kevin Smith)!
In the introduction, he writes about how people complained that this comic was not easily accessible enough (it took me forever to word that.. Too complicated and difficult and stuff) to casual fans or non-Green Arrow readers. And Joy thinks to herself: Aw, fuck. Oh well. I shall read it nonetheless.

Lost Languages - And the token linguistics book. This one is about deciphering different scripts - Hieroglyphs, Linear B, and so on. I read a few chapters at the library and it's awesomely interesting.

Children of Men - Okay, so I actually didn't get this one at the library. I got it a few weeks ago at a different library and took it along with me to start reading it. (I finished 2001 last night. The ending is trippy. I still am mourning Hal.) Man, it's crazy cool. All of the premise so far is this: In 1995, everyone suddenly went infertile (don't you just love how old SF books completely miscalculate the future? Maybe we're lagging too much in the technology department, but 1984 passed and we were still all for the most part okay, 2001 passed and we haven't reached Mars (much less Saturn) yet...). So it's set in 2020 or somewhere around there, and a dude's just describing life in a series of diary entries so far. It's way interesting though, and if I don't find out the reason for the infertility soon I am going to be very irritated until I finish the book. I WANT TO KNOOOW. XP

So, this should hold me for about...ever. (...That sounds like "a whole nother." "This should hold me about forever" doesn't sound right either.)

Mmm. They say it's edible. XD

Quickly approaching the end of 5th period. There were a bunch of freshmen in the room taking some quiz for Napier in here earlier. I probably should have made them put the chairs up. Oh well.

Thanks in no small part to Superdickery (a site which I am afraid to visit at school, though it's mostly harmless), I have temporarily become a comic book nerd. =D Yesterday Dad and I went to the library after dinner. I checked out a collection of Ray Bradbury stuff and Watchmen.
When we got home, I sat down and read three chapters of it. I like it a lot so far.

Not painting today, 'cos Chad has something else to do and I don't feel like spending two hours after school alone.

I should probably work on my Journalism project this afternoon. It's going to bite me in the ass if I keep procrastinating, just like it always does.

Ow. My feet don't hurt, but I've got this ache in my hip now.

I walked 6 miles this morning!
I did it last year, too. It's called Walk as One. It's this walkathon of hippies... democrats... people, and we're all walking against discrimination and stuff. Kerry/Edwards buttons everywhere, dogs everywhere, INCLUDING a dog with a Kerry/Edwards pin! It was crazy.
I went along with Paula, Jon, Sonja, Amanda, Brian Buddai, and some other people I didn't know. I ended up walking with Mrs. Stautberg, Mrs. Hartigan, Amanda, Paula, and Jon and Sonja off and on.

I didn't end up being as tired as last year, which was nice because I could then enjoy the talking and also the food afterwards.

There are a LOT of tame pigeons in the city. You can walk right up to them and only when you're close enough to step on them will they take off. I should catch some and send them to Faye. =P

After about an hour of resting, Dad and Paula and I went to the library(ies, actually, since we're pretty equally close to two different districts of libraries so I always go to both).
I brought along my list of books I want to find, and managed to find only one. I ended up going home with Anthem and Teach Yourself Beginner's Dutch. XD

I finished off on Friday the 2nd linguistics book from the school library. It was about signs and symbols, but even *it* mentioned Esperanto. It's kind of amusing, because Esperanto seems to get a paragraph of mention in a lot of books.

I probably have homework or something. Hm.

[Voices |Gisela - Aquella Estrella de Alla]

I'm starting to hate the library. Just a little bit.
Sure, they offer many many many pretty books for absolutely Zero dollars and Zero cents and Zero hundredths of a cent, but that's no good if YOU DON'T WANT ANY OF THE BOOKS THERE.

I went into the Union Township branch of the Clermont County Public Library today with two blue notebook-lined post-it notes (I fucking love those things. LINED POST-IT NOTES! FUCK YEAH!), with a list of 12 different books I wanted to check out.
After both this library and the Anderson branch of the Hamilton County Library, I came out with a single book.

I don't know if I read the wrong books, or the evil Library worker people are psychic and like to make me angry, or if I'm just terribly unlucky. But out of, as I said, 12 books, both libraries combined only had one.
Grrr.

Because of this poor turn out, I ended up going to Border's and buying Dune.
I almost wish we didn't have to do that, and that I'd bought The Shadow in the North instead, because I really don't see me re-reading Dune any time soon. To be honest, reading it is a chore, and I'm not quite sure why I don't just stop and re-read the Guide or something. Shadow in the North is a lot of fun, and I've really enjoyed it so far, and I read 50 pages yesterday, which is quite good for me, but now it's sitting in the return bin of the library because they won't let me renew more than once. T_T!

I'll get my mitts on Shadow someday. I wrote down which chapter I stopped at, and hopefully I'll still remember what's going on when I find it again.
Dune, I really don't care. I might read The (A?) Handmaid's Tale first, because a.) it's due... someday, and b.) I think I'll enjoy it.
Hope my dad doesn't bug me to read Dune.
This is the first book I've really not enjoyed for a while. And I'll stop complaining about it because I'm sure you've all quite gotten the message.

I watched Incubus today. The entire population of everyone who's ever seen the movie is right, the pronunciation *is* terrible. Lots of icky short i's. Eeeediots.
I want to find an Esperanto script. There are some lines I want to steal, but the subtitles are icky. I'd probably understand it if I saw it written down, but ITSNOTWRITTENDOWNAAUUURGH. Ahem.

My library has a Spanish Books section now. It's neat. They have a Hellboy Comic, and Stargirl. But it's not Chica Estrella or some rot, it's still just Stargirl. Huh.

The school library opens up Monday! YAY! Not like they'll have ANYTHING I'll ever CONSIDER reading... But I can look. They have Charlie Brown books in Spanish. XD
They have Watership Down, too. Maybe I'll reread that one o'these days.

There is a remarkably attractive young man (i.e., OMGHAWTT GUY!) who works at my library.
A little more incentive to read when whenever you finish a set of books you can see an attractive young man (which, it being summer and all, I don't often get to do).
I've seen him twice. He checked out my books today and I got to display my exceptional clumsiness. Wewt.

Now I've got The Shadow in the North, Dune, and Brave New World to read. Should keep me for a while.
I was blown away that my library had three books on my (considerably longer than three book) list. Because usually they have nothing.
Common books, I guess. But they didn't have I, Robot until a few weeks ago, and it's gotten checked out already.
The first Dirk Gently is "MISSING". =|

I got my MST3k DVD today. It was nice to kill some time with. But I need morrre! ._.

The other day, I decided, in my infinite wisdom (...heh.), to take the Inuktitut lyrics of 'Transformation' and a downloaded Inuit dictionary to see if I could make heads or tails of it.
...I couldn't. At all. Inuktitut has about a gazillion prefixes, suffixes, and whatever else that I couldn't get a single word out of it. Well, actually, I did get ONE word, partly because of luck and partly because of a guess: "Ma-linn-a" is the first line, and "malik" means 'to follow'. So I'm guessing it's something like "Follow me", since the English line is "Come with me". I know, no one cares.

I was a forum & comment whore on DA today. It was fun.

I had a dream last night that I was at Hogwarts and Snape was hot. It was fun.
Then I had another dream, but for the life of my I CAN'T REMEMBER IT. I hate that. I think I was at school.
I kept going back to sleep in the morning because I liked dreaming. I slept till like 10 when I usually wake up at 8.

I think I'm going to put off reading The Shadow in the North because the summary on the back of the book gave away a crucial plot point and the summary for the next book gave away an EVEN MORE important plot point and I DON'T WANT IT TO HAPPEN.
A certain character dies and that certain character is very hot and interesting in my mind's eye and I don't want to stop reading about him... =(
Why do writers always kill off the hot characters?
HDM, HP, and Sally Lockhart spoilers ) So that's why I'm not going to read any further until I... Dunno. Until I come to peace with him having to be killed off. XD
Well, I've got three books, so Sally can wait.

And there's your ugly rambling journal entry for the day. I hope you enjoyed it, or at least I hope I haven't wasted terribly too much time. =\

Aw shit, Faye. You made me cry.
I managed to not cry for the whole of PN day, and then this morning I read your journal and ended up bawling.

I still love you, though.

Today... was the last day of school. We did... nothing.
Well, that's not exactly true. We had nothing planned for the entire day, but I did manage to finish <i>Clockwork</i> and get about halfway through <i>Count Karlstein</i>. All y'all Pullman fans, he's written more than just HDM! <i>Clockwork</i> is a great, fun, quick read.

So now, it's officially summer. This means sleeping in, watching a lot of TV, reading less, and generally doing a lot of nothing. To try to remedy that, I have set up a few guidelines for this summer:

-I will pick my guitar back up and re-learn the notes. Even if my fingers hate me and I can't play chords, I can still have fun ploink-ploink-ploinking away.
-I will practice Spanish at least once a week - Reviewing grammar, vocab and whatnot, also trying to decipher the two Spanish books Mr. Smith let me borrow.
-I will try to listen to my entire CD collection by the end of the summer. There are so many CDs I have on my shelves that I listened to once and gave up on. Some are there because they're terrible, but maybe some aren't.
-I will watch Queer Eye every week.

That, along with the 4 CDs and 2 DVDs I'm expecting in the mail [not to mention Casey & co.'s letters =D] and the one DVD I have that I've yet to watch, should cover me for boredom. And then, of course, there's wasting my time here online, which is always fun.

My last period of the day was halfly spent in Mr. Curless's room ('Everyone's in Mr. Curless's room,' Ms. Napier said... It ended up being me, Mr. Curless, and another kid Eric.), and he asked me what my vote for was on <a href="http://www.westcler.org/gh/curlessmatt/CTS_Webpage/index2.htm">CTS's website</a>, for a new course. I automatically answered, "French!". Mr. Curless clicked the vote, and said, "French seems to be a popular one."
I'd already voted before, and now this, and I made Faye vote... But don't tell him that <_< >_>

The library needs to die. Or get more books. One or the other, you know.
I need to find some books to check out once I'm done with Count Karlstein, which will be in one or two days.
But... THEY DO NOT HAVE ANYTHING.
Believe me, I have a huge list of books I want to read. BUT NOTHING'S THERE.
*sighs, and continues checking the library's catalog*
YESYESYES!
They have the second Sally Lockheart book.
The thing is, I barely remember the first one.
So, I'll re-read the first one and then get this one. OKAY!

Now that I've got that settled, I have nothing else to talk about. =\

Erm... Comment with book recs? I've got a long list, but nothing is ever at the library and books are expensive xD

~Joy wonders if she will even read at all this summer... she never does...

[Voices |La Compagnie Creole - Ca Fait Rire Les Oiseaux]

I ended the school day today happily and eagerly awaiting my dad's coming home from work.

I told myself earlier in the day that I would finish Children of the Mind, and I did. I was quite proud of myself when I closed the back cover with a satisfying thud, sitting across the table from Trent. I smiled at him in my Hi-I'm-your-stalker-I'm-a-nerd way.

Dad came home at 4:30, and I asked him as soon as he walked through the door: "Hey Dad, can we go to the library today?"
Apparently, my dad was stressed and had things to do this evening. He told me in an irritable tone of voice that he'd see if he had time. I was sad.

Luckily, later that evening he told me we could go. This was especially lucky since we would be gone while Mom was tutoring a kid at the house and when we got back they'd be done. Yay.

So, we drive to the library. Happy happy.
We get there, an automatic door tries to murder me, I drop my books off, and commence the hunt.
Neither of the books I was looking for were available, and one of them wasn't even in the computer system.

So, I had to get my dad up from his (absolutely enthralling, I'm sure) magazine to join me on a quest for some books that would hold my attention.

Luckily, we succeeded.

I get home and examine my books.
I'm excited about each one. They're all less than 300 pages, so it won't take me long to get through them.

I look at the first one: The Martian Chronicles, by Ray Bradbury. I really liked Fahrenheit 451 and my recent SF addiction has yet to wear off. The fact that some of the dates that the stories are set have already passed (the first one is January 1999) amuses me. I've already decided that this is the first one I'll read, mostly out of the random chance that it's big enough to fit the library reciept as a bookmark and I'm in an SF mood.

However, the other books beckon to me. Something Wicked This Way Comes seems interesting, and I start to read the first page. No, I tell myself, don't start reading it or you won't be able to stop. And this journal was already cooking in my mind at the time, so I knew I'd have to stop soon and empty out the loose change and pocket lint of my brain.

Speaking of the first two books first doesn't mean the last one wasn't just as tempting. In fact, the last book was the only one I decided I had to read, just by looking at it.
It's called Longtusk, by Stephen Baxter, and it is a book about mammoths.
Why mammoths? I have no idea. But I've read books about rabbits, and deer, and wolves, and I've loved them all. I love animal fantasy books and there simply aren't enough of them.

I'm very excited about all of my books. I might even be glad that my library never has the book you set out to look for.

Anyway... W00T! Reading!
