[Voices |Blur - Coffee & TV]

Here's a meme, stolen from someone that none of you know.

Soundtrack of my life. Winamp on shuffle mode, and my attempts to explain the reasoning behind Winamp's powers of divination.

Opening Credits: The Postal Service - Natural Anthem
This would be a nice opening song. Nice and mellow at the start. Kinda reminds me of Bittersweet Symphony. Kind of noisy and nasty in the middle. I usually skip over this song.
I'll write you a song, and I hope that you won't mind, because all the names and places I have taken from real life. So please don't get upset at this portrait that I paint: It may be a little biased, but at least I spelled your name right.

Waking Up: They Might Be Giants - Boat of Car
A slightly despairing song, which is sometimes how I feel in the mornings I guess.
I was trying to get somewhere, but now I'm following the traces of your fingernails that run along the windshield on the boat of car.

First Day at School: Beck - Loser
Hah. Perfect.
Sprechen sie Deutsche, baby?

Falling in Love: Freezepop - Science Genius Girl
Freezepop songs sound a lot like falling in love. And while this song in specifically does not have that as its subject matter, the band has some good ones.
When I clone a human being, it will want to hold my hand. When I clone a human being, it will be a member of my band.

Fight Song: da Vinci's Notebook - Title of the Song
Describes a relationship-style fight, I guess. A template for a boy band love song.
Title of the song; naive expression of love. Reluctance to accept that you are gone. Request to turn back time, and rectify my wrongs. Repetition of the title of the song.

Breaking Up: The Police - One World (Not Three)
I don't know. Live and let live? Be nice to people. Everyone deserves respect...even if they're your ex? It doesn't relate well.
The third world breathes our air tomorrow, we live on the time we borrow. In our world there's no time for sorrow, in their world there is no tomorrow. One world is enough for all of us.

Prom: Dido - See the Sun
How depressing. Not a good match at all.
You can wear anything, as long as it's not black. Please don't mourn forever, she's not coming back.

Life: John Mayer - Covered in Rain
A cold sad song, of tragedy and keeping yourself from despair by holding on to that one person. But it doesn't have a happy ending. However, it does contain a cracking guitar solo. So maybe it's not about the ending, but the beautiful journey on the way.
It's dark I know, but then again, it's the brightest thing I've got.

Mental Breakdown: Frou Frou - Let Go
Well, this one has the obvious reason of the line "there's beauty in the breakdown". But it's not really talking about a mental crisis. It's talking about the imperfections of life. It's a nice, soothing, carpe diem-type song.
Such boundless pleasure; we've no time for later now. You can't await your own arrival. You have twenty seconds to comply.

Driving: The Wrens - Everyone Choose Sides
It's an angry song. Maybe one you'd enjoy singing in the car, if you could understand any of the lyrics. Subject-matter-wise, it's about the band themselves and not selling out, or something suchlike.
I've walked away from more than you imagine, and I sleep just fine

Flashback: Tom Paxton - Lyndon Johnson Told the Nation
Flashback in two ways: One, it is a history song about the Vietnam war, and two, I first heard it in 8th grade. Fond memories of that class. Mr. Brungs was an excellent teacher with good taste in movies and music too. His politics not so much, but eh.
Though it may seem very queer, we've got no jobs to give you here, so we are sending you to Vietnam.

Getting Back Together: They Might Be Giants - Where do they make Balloons?
Danny Weinkauf and his adorable little voice and his adorable little Beatles-esque song. Y'awwww. Uhm, it has nothing to do with 'getting back together'.
The ocean has the fishes, London has a tower, in Holland they have windmills, lots of bikes, and pretty flowers. But where, where do they make balloons?

Wedding: Rent - Finale A
Mimi is dying... That's no good for a wedding. Then again, it does deal with Love Overcoming All Barriers (TM).
I should tell you why I left, it wasn't 'cos I didn't--
--I know.

Birth of Child: Modest Mouse - Lives
Hm. It's about the self-defeating nature of life. A child is born, but life is over before it truly lives.
If you could be anything you want, I bet you'd be disappointed, am I right? No one really knows the ones they love. If you knew everything they thought about, you'd wish that they'd just shut up.

Final Battle: David J - This Vicious Cabaret
Preparing for revolution.
At least the trains all run on time, but they don't go anywhere.

Death Scene: Jekyll & Hyde - Murder, Murder!
Doesn't take an analytical genius to figure that one out.
Bessie, my love... You really should be more careful, wearing your real diamonds out on the street. You never know whom you might encounter.

Funeral Song: They Might Be Giants - New York City
Not a good funeral song. But certainly a good song.
I've packed my stuff, it's on the bus, I can't believe it's true: I'm three days from New York City, and I'm three days from you.

End Credits: John Mayer - 3x5
Pure beautiful poetry and mildly depressing longing bottled up into a song.
I guess you had to be there. I guess you had to be with me.

[Voices |Ruth's Hat - Super Heroes]

Winamp is on shuffle. Consider this as analysis practice for AP English, because we're doing poetry and I saw nothing of the same things that Mrs. Yarchi did in the poems we read. XD
The iTunes Winamp Oracle (Adapted from something Danielle posted):

1. What do you think of me, iTunes Winamp?
They Might Be Giants - Lucky Ball & Chain
Interpretation: I listen to Winamp too much and it wants to get rid of me. *twitch*

2. What do my friends really think of me?
We Are Scientists - In Action
Interpretation: "If everybody knows how it's gonna end, why doesn't someone stop me?" Perhaps they see things I don't in my life.

3. How can I make people like me more?
John Mayer - Only Heart
Interpretation: I should...*thinks*...be less suspicious? Though I'm not, usually.

4. What does my crush truly think of me?
Dido - Hunter
Interpretation: Lawl, 'crush'. :3

5. Do people secretly lust after me?
They Might Be Giants - Women & Men
Interpretation: THIS IS THE BEST RANDOM APPROPRIATE CHOICE EVER. Women and men secretly lust after me. *grin*

6. How can I maximize my pleasure during sex?
They Might Be Giants - Subliminal
Interpretation: Watch TV with random frames saying 'PENIS' inserted in.

7. Will I ever have children?
Jonathan Coulton - De-Evolving
Interpretation: The spreading of my genes will only leave the human race worse off.

8. Do you know where your children are?
John Mayer - Sucker
Interpretation: They are out playing cute little semi-depressing songs comparing the speaker to a beer and a bong because they are caught in the eternal hellpit that is unrequited love.

9. What should I do with my life?
Jonathan Coulton - Ikea
Interpretation: I should set up a Swedish furniture shop. Naturally.

10. Will I have a happy life?
Regina Spektor - Us
Interpretation: I shall be with someone, and they will make a statue out of us, and name a city after us, and later say it's all our fault.

11. Why must life be so full of pain?
Utada Hikaru - Tokyo Nights
Interpretation: Blame Japan?

12. What do you think happiness is?
Tsunami Bomb - Being Alright
Interpretation: I think that pretty much answers the question, other than the trespass in grammar.

13. How can I make myself happy?
La Compagnie Creole - t'es ok
Interpretation: By hanging around people who are 'ok'. And French.

14. Will I die happy?
The Decemberists - The Crane Wife 1 and 2
Interpretation: I am actually a cloth-weaving crane, and that story doesn't have a happy ending. :(

15. Can you give me some good advice?
Lemon Demon - The Ultimate Showdown
Interpretation: Good guys come out on top. An interesting aside, someone wrote a Superdickery Ultimate Showdown and I was the winner.

16. What is the nature of the Universe?
Devo - Beautiful World
Interpretation: Interesting choice. An ironic, bitter song about the world. "It's a beautiful world, for you, if not for me."

[Voices |Radiohead - Fitter Happier]

Lullaby rock songs: Kinda weird, kinda cool. Using No Surprises as the sample song on that page is slightly creepy though. "I'll take a quiet life, a handshake of carbon monoxide, no alarms and no surprises please." That might just be me. Can you imagine being raised on that and then finding out what it's originally from?

Escher photoshopping: Purdy!

If you haven't heard about it yet, AOL released a bunch of their search records recently. (*is glad she doesn't use AOL*) If you're anything like me, and if you can put up with reading my ramblings chances are that you are at least a little, you've looked through your own search history from time to time. It can be interesting sometimes.
A few choice Google searches of mine, f'rinstance:
  • ""Exellent!" Holmes ejaculated."
  • "Ahsonnutli, the turquoise hermaphrodite"
  • "andrew jackson in dress"
  • A 7-foot tall man who has been smoking cigarettes since childhood
  • gusbus lyrics
  • quenya imperative

...interestingly enough, I can almost remember why I searched for all of those things.
Anyway, search histories are interesting in a nosy sort of way. Peek in on other people's lives and whatnot. The easiest way is Splunk'd.

This is taking up way too much of my free time. You just pick one of the other, which is better. It's sooo nerdy.
The top 10 best things ever, according to the people of the internet:
1. Members of the opposite sex who are hot AND smart AND want to sleep with you
2. Saying the perfect thing at the perfect moment, so that everyone laughs long and loud.
3. Finding out that that hideous accident/chemical spill/etc that should have killed you has instead imbued you with superpowers
4. Saying something witout thinking, and having it be the perfect thing to say
5. Finally learning telekinesis, like you always knew you could if you tried hard enough
6. The ability to light things on fire with your mind
7. Waking up next to the person you love
8. Meaningful late night conversations with that someone you desire
9. When you find out the girl (or guy) of the your dreams feels the same way about you.
10. Waking up in the morning realizing you’re perfectly comfy and being able to enjoy it for as long as you want

Tough decision: Which is better? The Oxford English Dictionary OR Secret hallways.

I do not want this summer to end, at all. It's not that the other summers I've felt like "YAY SCHOOL!" and it's not that I'm particularly dreading this school year, it's just other summers I have been so mind-crushingly bored and this summer I haven't. I've just been doing more, and keeping a semi-regular sleep schedule too (going to bed sometime after midnight, waking up whenever I can force myself out of bed, which is unfortunately usually some ten hours later).

I dunno.

http://spideyvalentine.ytmnd.com/

I should read Spiderman: Blue (where that's from). Jeph Loeb is amazing.

So, I haven't updated in a while. Remember when I used to document my entire day, every day? And everyone else did too. Those were strange times.

I went to Autobahn last Saturday night with Danielle and Jessie, and it was beyond amazing. Freezepop was there, obviously. For one reason or another DoBH couldn't make it. All the bands were really great, though. For the second year in a row, we left right before Joy Electric came on. Not that I mind at all (I was really tired after Freezepop), but I think it's funny that I still haven't heard any of their music.

Here's a meme, seemingly classier than a Livejournal quiz. I'd appreciate it if you did it, and I'll do it for anyone else if they post it. It's a good bit of introspection.

Wooow. Hahaha. Here are the lyrics to Katamari Damacy's songs, translated. Katamari Mambo is diiirty.

Let's get the prince all drunk! )

Also, here's this most excellent anecdote from Katamari sound director Yu Miyake:

"I often record my melodies that I have in my head using my cellular phone or PC by humming. My workspace is not completely private, and my co-workers make fun of me if they hear me humming, so I always record my humming secretly. I decided to insert this humming in the title sequence of the test version of the game because I thought it would be funny and a bit kooky. It was just a joke at first, but then people started to like it so I decided to keep it – and that’s why you hear some weirdo humming when you first load the game."

Soo, recommend me some more. I plan on ripping my Trans-Siberian Orchestra CD, but other than that I don't think I have anything. Tell me anything you want as long as it's good and it's got a winter, holiday (if you have Hanukkah songs that aren't by Adam Sandler, that's a plus), or Christmas theme.

And, what's that song they played all the goddamn time last year? For The Polar Express? I think it was Josh Groban. It was a good song.

[Voices |They Might Be Giants - Damn Good Times]

Miscelany:

Today's Merriam-Webster word of the day email was obsequious. ^_^ I already knew that word - it's in the TMBG song "Turn Around". The email gave me some good insight though - the sequi part is from the Latin 'to follow' - whence sekvi, seguir, etc.

I have not given up on NaNo, per se - But I haven't written anything since Saturday. I haven't had any time. I'm going to put in 10 or 20 thou words during the break, hopefully, but I'm fairly sure I'm not going to actually finish. I'll wrap up the novel after the end of the month if it's convenient and post it. :]

I fell asleep at 7 last night, right after dinner. Seriously. This did let me manage to wake up a full hour early this morning, luckily, which gave me some time to do my Chemistry homework. This would be the first time I've finished my Chemistry homework on time since... ...ever.

Unfortunately counterracting this joyous event is the fact that I got a 69 (which is the very top point of the 'failing' level, for those of you with actually normal grading systems) on the last test. I tried hard, dammit.

The chart you gave me for trig functions is coming in handy, Warren. Our teacher gave us the same chart but it helped that I'd seen it before. =D

On Friday, Paula and I are going to Joseph-Beth to see her teacher's band play. Mwah. Mr. Howeverthefuckyouspellhisname is awesome, but I've never had him as a teacher. It's pronounced Reerden but I think it's spelled like Riordan or something.
I <3 bands that play in bookstores and libraries simply on principle anyway.

One reason to love YTMND: http://whatistmbg.ytmnd.com/
One reason to love mashups: http://dontletsstart.ytmnd.com/

I have no idea if anyone else likes mashups (I just know I do), but JC did one earlier and I <3 him for it. It sounds kinda rough, but I like it. Beatles 'When I'm 64'/Chicago '25 or 6 to 4' - http://www.jonathancoulton.com/2005/11/18/thing-a-week-10-when-im-25-or-64/

We're listening to Hakuna Matata and Esta Noche es para Amar in Spanish today! You may or may not remember me telling you that I burned El Rey León and La Bella y la Bestia onto CDs for Mr. Ammerman, but it's finally being followed up. Our class really likes singing [well, the front half of the class. The girls + one of the girls' boyfriend, basically] so it should be fun.

Today, being the last day before Thanksgiving weekend, should be fun. Should be. But it's not going to be. Our school started a new policy last year that every day before a break teachers had to have a graded assignment in class. So I've got 1 graded homework, 2 tests, 2 quizzes, and an essay. At the very least.

It's still going to be a fun day, if only for Spanish.

[Spirits | awake]
[Voices |John Williams - Grievous Speaks To Lord Sidious]

It was time to do another survey, I dunno )

Oh, since I said I'd write about it later, I'll write about it now. Things of note from the weekend:

-Jehovah's Witnesses on bikes. Hahah. We saw them driving, these two kids in suits with backpacks biking around a neighborhood. It was Dad who IDed them and I never would have thought of it, but he's probably right. I don't know, amusing.

-Friday night went to a thing at Elyssa's church. Jessie was supposed to be there too, but she wasn't. : ( I did have fun, discounting the few moments of discomfort that comes with the territory of going to something at someone's church. After the volleyball game we all sat and listened to someone preach for a while, and he spelled out the fact that this whole event was basically to convert teenagers. And he got some, too. A little creepy.

-The start of the evening was a Lady Bearcats volleyball game, which I enjoyed a lot more than I thought I would. Mostly because we were right next to this huge cheering section which called out specific things at times: whenever the other team served, they would shout "Noonan!" (??) to make them mess up, and when they did and we got a point for the serve, they would pound on the chairs and count out how many 'noonans' we had gotten. Also whenever the ball went just barely over the net, hitting the top, from the other side, they would should "I hate that rule!" (and conversely, when the Bearcats hit it to the other side touching the top of the net, "I love that rule!"). Now, we all know that I love things with audience participation, so this was right up my alley. It was awesome, and much funnier than your run-of-the-mill "Let's go Bearcats" type of callbacks.

-Then we went to Sports Plus, which is this huge sports and game center. I played DDR (or, 'Pump it Up', a DDR clone with diagonal buttons and a center button instead) for the first time and sucked yay. There was an inflatable obstacle course, and Elyssa and I were doing it and she fell while climbing. She had to sit down and eventually go to the hospital. She either sprained or broke her ankle and left for the rest of the night. D=

I also played Laser Tag for the first time ever. I really really enjoyed it. It was stimulating, but it wasn't exhausting or anything. Fun yes. I'm going to have to go to Scallyway Tag sometime.

Then we went bowling and stuff. I bowled a 31, hellz yeah. We got back home at 6:30a. For real. =D

-On Saturday daytime, I volunteered at a show choir thing at school for NHS service hours. One of the choirs did a Chicago-themed show!!! And it was awesome.

-Today we saw Zathura. It has everything - Time travel, incest, robots and a gerbil, but it still managed to be not nearly as good as Jumanji. The CG space sky was preeeetty though.

And that's all for now.

~Joy didn't do any homework this weekend. Oops.

[Voices |Franz Liszt - Liebestraum No 3 in A flat major]

Joyuna - I hijacked her account and made posts that made it seem like she was my girlfriend. And afterwards I kept making posts with my own account to support that. And a few people seemed to believe that.

Brak/Revaryn caught on real fast. "Joy's not perverted/crazy enough for you" is what he said. He's right.

I'm insulted! Ha.

Positive side effect of NaNo: Discovery of more classical music, which I've been wanting to do for a good long while. I can't write well with vocal music playing in the background; it's too distracting. So my Winamp playlist for the month is all classical and soundtrack music. My last.FM charts will show a jump in John Williams and Vangelis. Interesting.

I have committed myself to 4 Journalism articles.
I am a fool.
But I'll get to write a ranteditorial on Intelligent Design. Who knows if it'll be any good.

Tomorrow Jessie, Elyssa and I are going to Kings Island; the last weekend the park is open before whatever they do during the winter.
Tuesday we get off school, but I won't be able to sleep in because it'll be my first in-car driving school session.

I'll be able to sleep in as much as I like on Sunday though.

So, the past 12 hours have been pretty awesome.
I stayed up till 4a last night. If Dad knew this fact he wouldn't have been so surprised/angry when I woke up 5 minutes before we left for school.
Somehow I made it out the door though.

So last night/this morning I had the foresight to copy CDs of El Rey León and La Bella y la Bestia. I gave 'em to Mr. Ammerman today and él dijo que nosotros vamos a escucharlos ...next week =D!
So, rawk. Happy Joy.
Also in Chemistry I understood some of it. I completely effed up most of the problems, but that was just sloppy math on my part and I've got the general concepts down. I think.
I did my Math homework too. The last 10 minutes of AP US. But I understood it and did it all. OMGProud of myself, I am.

Weeeeekend. *hugs it* Going to Neeewport. Tomorrow probably going over to Jessica's house for a birthday thing, if she calls me. Or if I can find her number on the caller ID because she's probably already called and I just missed it. Whatev.

I also found a song about Pi last night. }=D Gaze upon the crazyness. The same band has a song about the heart, in Spanish. In the form of a Latin romance song. Wow.
And JC has covered Baby Got Back. I must listen to it when I get home.

It's a good day. A very good day.

I got one of my journalism drafts done too. 2 to go. o_o

Some generic music talk [Sep. 29th, 2005|02:09 am]

Harvey Danger's (ya know, that band that did Flagpole Sitta) new album is being put up by them for free on BitTorrent.
http://www.harveydanger.com/downloads/
I haven't listened to it yet, but it DLed fast as all heck. I'll let you know how it is.

I also got the first Gorillaz album a couple days ago and haven't had a chance to listen to any but the first 5 songs. They're really good.

...Going to have to write my Journalism articles now. Also email some guy for quotes. You know Stautberg wants me to write an article to be in the Community Journal? That's our county's monthly paper. That's creepy kinda. Since Ashley gradutated, and Ashley was the awesomest, most destined to become a reporter writer in Journalism, I think I've been picked next o.o;; At least I'm not the only Junior on staff this year.

I took a nerdity test that was posted on SD. The questions were really really hard, in an "either you know it or you don't" sense. They had one about Klingon: "success". The answer listed was Qa'pla, but for some reason it felt wrong to me.
I looked it up and it was really Qapla'. And yes the placement of the apostrophe makes a difference. And my mind is a linguistic steel trap and it's scary. I SHOULD NOT REMEMBER WHERE THE GLOTTAL STOP IS ON THE KLINGON WORD FOR "SUCCESS". I should not. Why do I.

We played Go Fish during lunch* today. It was the bomb.

*Yes we had lunch on a half day. It was at like 9a, and it was more of a brunch. They served French Toast sticks. The word on the street is that the cafeteria lost so much money last year because of no lunch of half days that they had to change it. It doesn't make any sense but I'm not going to argue.

*yawn* Homework is crap. All I know about my interim grades so far is that I have an 80-something in English.

~Joooooy... *stops yawning* Joy fell asleep this afternoon again.

Meme so totally stolen from Danielle.
A fun twist on the "Open Winamp and put down 20 songs" theme.

1. Open your music player of choice.
2. Put the shuffle mode on.
3. Type the names of the first 15 songs into google image search and post the weirdest images on the first page that comes up.

Image-heavy, duh )
(Warning: one small bit of pr0n because it was truly the oddest picture to come up. I guess Superdickery/Mental Corrosion has desensitized me a bit in regard to boobies. Apologies.)

ohmygod I'm tired. Sleeping would be bad though. CHEM CHEM CHEM!

JC is a full-time musician now. You should go buy his CD.

I should go buy his other CD.

Thanks all for your kind words of support. This blog thing is a nice cheap form of therapy isn’t it? I fear that I have become addicted to positive responses from the ether - without the steady infusion of thumbs-ups from everyone who’s emailed and commented over the last few months, I might well have decided to stay forever inside the soft velvet cage of gainful employment. It’s because of you guys that I will soon be penniless and alone.

Hey, wait a minute…

If you're just joining in on the party; if I haven't assaulted you with his lovely songs yet; it's rock/pop/acoustic/folk/nerd. Some songs are startlingly TMBG-esque (I'm a Mason Now is Spy's bass, mixed with Santa's Beard's chorus, with lyrics of the Stonecutter's song from The Simpsons. It's this crazy delicious nerd love child. And it rocks hard.). Some songs would deserve to be on Top 40 radio if they weren't about mathematics (Mandelbrot Set, you're a Rorschach test on fire!).

And some songs are about Europe and are hilarious.
Over there, you can eat
a lot of mayonnaise with your frites
and no one will say "Hey, that's too much mayonnaise!"

I HAVE MONEY NOW. I thinkin' I'ma go get me some Signo Bits now *squee* They also said they'd have them in singles this month, so maybe I'll wait just a little bit.
