| | Death Cab for Cutie - Different Names for the Same Thing | ] | Ah, the thrill of understanding! There is nothing better than it. Not love, not money, not sex, not anything. Standing there at work today, talking with German, having a conversation however slow and halting it was, in Spanish. Not in Spanish, translated to English, translated back to Spanish. All in Spanish. No inner translation involved. Just thinking in Spanish. Knowing what he was saying. Knowing what to say.
It's so ephemeral that as soon as I take a step back to admire it, it's gone. I lost the connection and a torrent of meaningless Spanish washes over me, and I have to ask him to repeat it, or I start code-switching and answer him in English. It takes a lot of concentration, and if you let up for one second you've lost it. I went to an ASL Live Lab for Sign Language class, where some Deaf people come in and tell stories and talk with students. One guy was telling a bunch of stories about where he worked, and I was catching most of it even though he used a ton of words I didn't know. I started to relax, and then realised that I was just staring at his hands moving, and wasn't taking anything in. I can't understand Spanish or ASL in the same way I understand English, effortlessly. It takes a lot of work, but with exceptional reward.
It's like the lightbulb going off, constantly. It's like when I'm the first person in my math class to realise that the volume of a cylinder is the area of the circle, times its height. Like an infinite number of circles stacked on top of each other. When I realise that the surface area of a sphere is the derivative of the volume of a sphere, because it's the change in slope and antiderivative is the area under a cuve. It's like a million little "a-hah!" moments for every word I hear and every sentence I say.
Of course the Mexican guys at my work are still mostly jerks, but you can't choose the people you have to interact with. And it was a little annoying, because German kept telling me to repeat the things that I said to his brother Nicolas. "Nico, Nico, preguntale que esta haciendo!" he would say, to get me to say again that I was tirando la basura. Oy. They're all really tickled to death over however little Spanish I can speak.
Anyway. One of the girls at school tells me there might be another little Spanish-speaking chiquitito at the elementary school that we could help tutor. Yesica moved away some time ago, and I need another dose of adorable, amirite?
*sigh* Sunday night. Where did the weekend go, hm? Who stole it from me? Am I really going to school tomorrow?

Can you imagine being raised on that and then finding out what it's originally from?
Escher photoshopping: Purdy!
If you haven't heard about it yet, AOL released a bunch of their search records recently. (*is glad she doesn't use AOL*) If you're anything like me, and if you can put up with reading my ramblings chances are that you are at least a little, you've looked through your own search history from time to time. It can be interesting sometimes. A few choice Google searches of mine, f'rinstance:
- ""Exellent!" Holmes ejaculated."
- "Ahsonnutli, the turquoise hermaphrodite"
- "andrew jackson in dress"
- A 7-foot tall man who has been smoking cigarettes since childhood
- gusbus lyrics
- quenya imperative
...interestingly enough, I can almost remember why I searched for all of those things. Anyway, search histories are interesting in a nosy sort of way. Peek in on other people's lives and whatnot. The easiest way is Splunk'd.
This is taking up way too much of my free time. You just pick one of the other, which is better. It's sooo nerdy. The top 10 best things ever, according to the people of the internet: 1. Members of the opposite sex who are hot AND smart AND want to sleep with you 2. Saying the perfect thing at the perfect moment, so that everyone laughs long and loud. 3. Finding out that that hideous accident/chemical spill/etc that should have killed you has instead imbued you with superpowers 4. Saying something witout thinking, and having it be the perfect thing to say 5. Finally learning telekinesis, like you always knew you could if you tried hard enough 6. The ability to light things on fire with your mind 7. Waking up next to the person you love 8. Meaningful late night conversations with that someone you desire 9. When you find out the girl (or guy) of the your dreams feels the same way about you. 10. Waking up in the morning realizing you’re perfectly comfy and being able to enjoy it for as long as you want
Tough decision: Which is better? The Oxford English Dictionary OR Secret hallways.
I do not want this summer to end, at all. It's not that the other summers I've felt like "YAY SCHOOL!" and it's not that I'm particularly dreading this school year, it's just other summers I have been so mind-crushingly bored and this summer I haven't. I've just been doing more, and keeping a semi-regular sleep schedule too (going to bed sometime after midnight, waking up whenever I can force myself out of bed, which is unfortunately usually some ten hours later).
I dunno.

| | Dido - Closer | ] | Elyssa took Jessie and me to another anime convention today. Hahahah... and believe you me I was so not expecting to spend 12+ hours there...
It was fun though. Photos are here. I said it after Sugoicon and I'll say it again now: One doesn't need to be an anime fan to enjoy an anime convention. The people are all so ridiculously nice and lots of hugs are involved. We even got some sort of lesson on glomping.
Things I have seen today: Lots of guys in drag. Even more girls in drag. A woman in armor made out of boxes of pocky, with another person behind her making clip-clop noises coconut-style with two more pocky boxes. A man who goes by the name of 'Doctor Bearsex'. Zoidberg Cloud. Lots of other weird shit.
What I took home with me: A box of PINEAPPLE POCKY!!!!!, and a Maromi plushie that's all soft and squishy that makes me giggle and squee and behave in a way generally uncharacteristic of my normal self.
Adorable little evil puppydog... <3
Near the end of the night we all ended up splitting up - I went to a panel on anime and manga translation. There were only five other people there, and they were all pretty quiet... I found it interesting though. The woman running the panel spoke Japanese, Thai, Mandarin, and some Vietnamese and Korean. This would be something for me to aspire to, teehee.
Translation really seems like something I could do with my life - it is, after all, a combination of language and writing. Interpreting on the fly for a person would freak me out, but translating a novel or a movie? That would be really neat, I think.
So all in all, today was cool. Saw lots of weird and/or neat stuff, met lots of interesting people (including a lot of Doug's friends, who I met when seeing Pirates of the Caribbean! Sure didn't expect to run into them, but we did), and even learned some stuff. But right now I am tired and I have a bit of a headache so it is time for me to hit the sack.
~Joy had no idea there were so many types of pocky... |

In all actuality, I don't really care whether people say "Merry Christmas", "Happy Holidays", "Eid mubarak" or whatever to me as long as the meaning is there. But we have to write from the assigned viewpoint for staff editorials, and this "war on Christmas" bullshit is getting insane.

Today's Merriam-Webster word of the day email was obsequious. ^_^ I already knew that word - it's in the TMBG song "Turn Around". The email gave me some good insight though - the sequi part is from the Latin 'to follow' - whence sekvi, seguir, etc.
I have not given up on NaNo, per se - But I haven't written anything since Saturday. I haven't had any time. I'm going to put in 10 or 20 thou words during the break, hopefully, but I'm fairly sure I'm not going to actually finish. I'll wrap up the novel after the end of the month if it's convenient and post it. :]
I fell asleep at 7 last night, right after dinner. Seriously. This did let me manage to wake up a full hour early this morning, luckily, which gave me some time to do my Chemistry homework. This would be the first time I've finished my Chemistry homework on time since... ...ever.
Unfortunately counterracting this joyous event is the fact that I got a 69 (which is the very top point of the 'failing' level, for those of you with actually normal grading systems) on the last test. I tried hard, dammit.
The chart you gave me for trig functions is coming in handy, Warren. Our teacher gave us the same chart but it helped that I'd seen it before. =D
On Friday, Paula and I are going to Joseph-Beth to see her teacher's band play. Mwah. Mr. Howeverthefuckyouspellhisname is awesome, but I've never had him as a teacher. It's pronounced Reerden but I think it's spelled like Riordan or something. I <3 bands that play in bookstores and libraries simply on principle anyway.
One reason to love YTMND: http://whatistmbg.ytmnd.com/ One reason to love mashups: http://dontletsstart.ytmnd.com/
I have no idea if anyone else likes mashups (I just know I do), but JC did one earlier and I <3 him for it. It sounds kinda rough, but I like it. Beatles 'When I'm 64'/Chicago '25 or 6 to 4' - http://www.jonathancoulton.com/2005/11/18/thing-a-week-10-when-im-25-or-64/
We're listening to Hakuna Matata and Esta Noche es para Amar in Spanish today! You may or may not remember me telling you that I burned El Rey León and La Bella y la Bestia onto CDs for Mr. Ammerman, but it's finally being followed up. Our class really likes singing [well, the front half of the class. The girls + one of the girls' boyfriend, basically] so it should be fun.
Today, being the last day before Thanksgiving weekend, should be fun. Should be. But it's not going to be. Our school started a new policy last year that every day before a break teachers had to have a graded assignment in class. So I've got 1 graded homework, 2 tests, 2 quizzes, and an essay. At the very least.
It's still going to be a fun day, if only for Spanish. ...IforgottodomyEnglishhomeworkohfuck

Rocky Horror Picture Show FOR THE WIN.
Cosmo got the photos up really quick this time. http://www.thedentonaffair.org/gallery/imageFolio.cgi?direct=Shows/2005/10-30_Esquire_Theatre
Relevant info: The people who went are me, Danielle, Doug, Dad and Paula. I brought my V mask to the show and wore it at random intervals. I also brought a prop bag, and got sprayed with silly string.
Let's give 'em a look...
Before the show: This guy was kind of a dick. I don't know, he was the one introducing everything tonight instead of the other guy, and I didn't like him very much. Me! I can't see Danielle or Doug in there, dunno why. They were sitting next to and behind me, respectively. Dad and Paula. I wish Paula liked it more. She fell asleep twice during the show. D: Danielle says cheese and I'm covering my face. Why? Hm. The Asian guy next to me took a picture of my mask as we were leaving the theatre :D Dad and Paula
The Virgin Sacrifice: I seriously don't know if this was a boy or girl. BATMAN! Or, "The Dork Knight". Nothing needs to be said here. During the virgin sacrifice, Danielle and I made Doug go up even though he wasn't a virgin. He got dryhumped. There aren't any pictures of Doug specifically, but this should give you an idea.
And the show begins... Look! It's the cute kid who was Brad last time! He didn't play a part this time. He just kind of stood around and yelled out some stuff. But he's still great-looking. Oh yeah, he played whatever Hapschatt. But that's like, 5 lines. Whatever. Memorable callback: There's one thing left to say and that's ONLY. ASSHOLES. CARRY CHALK!</a> ...Y'know, as Brad writes the heart on the door. I guess it's one of those visual gags. Those are the best, though! The Crim. In his book, at the picture of Dr. Scott, there was the policeman from Family Guy! It was classic. FUCK THAT CHIN! FUCK THAT CHIN!
They arrive at the castle... You can see me wearing me mask as the Hairless One sings. Again #3 and the back of Doug's head And we do The Time Warp! All three of us, and me with my mask on. Dad and Paula The Crim took Danielle up in front to do the Time Warp, because she was wearing a TMBG shirt. Again Our Frank was a girl this time! She did well though. So now we have a girl Rocky and a girl Frank, thus restoring the slash equilibrium. Frank's ass and Danielle and I. This is my favourite shot in the entire movie.
The monster is created... Drew Barrymore. I mean, Rocky. He likes to blow small things. Silly string. Dick! The result of the silly string. Worth noting, too, that the silly string was sprayed into the audience. Danielle and I sat in the first row, so we got it all over us, and the Crim (or maybe it was Dr. Scott, I forget) specifically sprayed a bunch onto my lap and a person a few seats down. Men in lingerie are always good. Me, in my mask and party hat. :D Again
Okay, so that was a long-ass list, but at least I cut it down from 353 images, huh? So be thankful, you cretins.
The anime con was good, but would have been better if I, y'know, knew more about anime. Going to a con is a sort of nerd rite of passage I guess. We played tofuball. It was excellent. There was this stuffed tofu cube that we threw around in a circle and kept up like a volleyball. Heee.
Busy-ass weekend. Need sleep and food.
Oh, and before Rocky Paula and I went to a party of one of her friends, Andrew. We didn't do much of anything except roast marshmallows, hang out and later watch Phantom of the Opera, but it was neat. There was this Korean exchange student kid who came. His name is Suan (or some variant spelling of that) and he's adorable. He roasted marshmallows for the first time and he was nice and sweet and he's a really good singer and pianist. I want to meet him again. :(
And tomorrow is Halloween. Good show.
